Robust monopoly pricing

چکیده

We consider a robust version of the classic problem of optimal monopoly pricing with incomplete information. In the robust version, the seller faces model uncertainty and only knows that the true demand distribution is in the neighborhood of a given model distribution. We characterize the pricing policies under two distinct decision criteria with multiple priors: (i) maximin utility and (ii) minimax regret. The equilibrium price under either criterion is lower then in the absence of uncertainty. The concern for robustness leads the seller to concede a larger information rent to all buyers with values below the optimal price without uncertainty. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Price discrimination and the location choice of a durable goods monopoly

Delivered pricing by a spatial monopoly amounts to third degree price discrimination. Well known results in spatial economics show that the monopolist location choice is efficient under delivered pricing and generally inefficient under mill pricing. By contrast, the present paper shows that if the monopolist sells a durable good, the location is also inefficient under delivered pricing.  2002 ...

Regulating Private Infrastructure Investment: Optimal Pricing for Access to Essential Facilities

This paper analyses optimal pricing for access to essential facilities in a competitive environment. The focus is on investment incentive issues arising from regulation under complete information. To that end, examining the provision of a natural monopoly infrastructure with unlimited capacity, it is shown that the fixed component of a regulated access price can be structured so as to induce a ...

Monopoly Profits in a Competitive Market for Undifferentiated Information Goods via Differentiated Pricing Schemes

It is known that the Bertrand outcome can be avoided when sellers are capacity constrained (Edgeworth 1897); when products are differentiated (d'Aspremont, Gabszewicz, and Thisse 1979); when the model is changed from one of short-run competition to long-run competition (Chamberlin 1929); when consumers are not perfectly informed or if it is costly for them to obtain information (Salop 1977). Ja...

Pricing in social networks

We analyze the problem of optimal monopoly pricing in social networks in order to characterize the influence of the network topology on the pricing rule. It is shown that this influence depends on the type of providers (local versus global monopoly) and of externalities (consumption versus price). We identify two situations where the monopolist does not discriminate across nodes in the network ...

Multi-Period Pricing for Perishable Products: Uncertainty and Competition

The pricing problem in a multi-period setting is a challenging problem and has attracted much attention in recent years. In this thesis, we consider a monopoly and an oligopoly pricing problem. In the latter, several sellers simultaneously seek an optimal pricing policy for their products. The products are assumed to be differentiated and substitutable. Each seller has the option to set prices ...
